ABSTRACT
Radiation therapy is one of important modalities for cancer treatment. Recent technical developments make it possible to deliver radiation more precisely to tumors, resulting in clinical gains. However, biological aspects of radiation therapy are not fully understood and need to be investigated for broadening therapeutic windows between tumor control and normal tissue damage. Thus, dissecting cellular pathways regarding to ionizing radiation-induced cancer cell killing or normal tissue damage is necessary to develop new strategies to improve efficacy of radiation therapy and help select patients most likely to benefit from radiation therapy. In this talk, I will present new strategies to sensitize cancer cells to radiation therapy. First, I will introduce Mn-porphyrin-based superoxide dismutase mimetics as a radiosensitizer that increases radiation sensitivity in breast cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Second, I will show how epigenetic drugs such as histone deacetylase inhibitors modulate cellular response to especially proton therapy, the state-of-the-art radiation technology. Finally, I will present collaborative projects currently ongoing and discuss about future of personalized radiation therapy.
